Xavier Valls was born in Barcelona in 1923. He received his first drawing classes from the sculptor Charles Collet. In 1937 he entered the Escuela Massana and went on to learn techniques such as mural painting and stained glass with Jaume Busquets. He collaborated as a draughtsman with one of the best-known goldsmiths of the style known as noucentisme, Ramón Sunyer. In 1949 he obtained a grant from the French Institute to study in Paris, where he settled, and met artists such as Balthus, Luis Fernández, Alberto Giacometti and María Zambrano. He worked with Fernand Léger for four years on the stained-glass windows in the church of Audincourt. He took part in various international exhibitions and salons, and won the prize for best still life in the Spanish-American Art Biennial in 1955; he also achieved notable success with his exhibitions in the Galleries of Henriette Gomès and Claude Bernard. In the 1980s, retrospectives of his work were held in France and Spain. He died in Barcelona in 2006.
