" Writer and journalist. His novels are characterised by social satire and an ironic view of human beings."

He was born in A Coruña in 1885. From an early age he began to contribute to Galician newspapers and cultural magazines. At the age of 17 he edited "Diario Ferrolano" and later "El Noroeste" in A Coruña. In Madrid he worked as a parliamentary reporter for the newspaper “ABC”, where he had a fixed section called “Notes by a Listener”. He established his reputation as a writer with his first novels “La tristeza de la paz” and “Volvoreta”, the latter focused on the Galician rural world. After the Spanish Civil War he published two novels that reflected his experiences during the conflict. In 1943 he wrote “El bosque animado”, recalling his childhood in Galicia. In 1945 he became a member of the Spanish Royal Academy, with a speech entitled "El humor en la literatura española" (Humour in Spanish Literature). He died in Madrid in 1964.
