" Playwright. His work in both prose and verse marked a change in sensibilities which heralded the triumph of realism.
 "

He was born in Madrid in 1829 into a family of actors. At an early age he adapted the work 'Genoveva de Brabante' by Anicet Bourgevis for his parents to appear in. From that point he dedicated his life to the theatre, until the failure of his play 'Los hombres de bien' (1870) led him to turn his attention to other activities: official in the Ministry of the Interior, director of the library at the Institute of San Isidro, secretary of the Spanish Royal Academy (1874) and director of the National Library (1884). He evolved from a late Romantic style towards realism, and his position in this second phase can clearly be seen in the acceptance speech he gave on joining the Royal Academy in 1859, entitled: 'Truth considered as a source of beauty in dramatic literature'. He died in Madrid in 1898.
