" Architect, engineer and sculptor. His designs have a very personal touch that make them easy to recognise. He is one of the most internationally recognised of Spanish architects."

Born in Benimamet (Valencia) in 1951. He studied Fine Arts, Architecture and Civil Engineering. He did a postgraduate course in Town Planning in Valencia, and was a disciple of Juan Carlos Jiménez, an architect from Cuenca. He is mainly known for his architectural works, but he has also worked as a sculptor. He was a teacher in Zurich, too. In 1989 he worked on the Lyon Airport Railway Station project. The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York organised a monographic exhibition on Calatrava in 1993. One of his most iconic works is the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia, a set of buildings designed together with Félix Candela. He is considered to be an architect who specialises in large structures.
