" Nun and mystic writer. Her work, written in colloquial language, served her religious work."

Teresa de Cepeda y Ahumada was born in Ávila in 1515. We can follow her life and spiritual evolution through her works written as autobiographies: “La vida” (1562-1565); “Spiritual Relations”; “Book of the Foundations” (begun in 1573 and published in 1610); and her almost five-hundred “Cartas” (letters). She founded the barefoot Carmelite nuns and was also the great reformer of the order together with Saint John of the Cross. To help her nuns achieve their spiritual life, she wrote “The Way of Perfection (1562-1564) and “Las moradas” and “The Interior Castle” (1578). The reaction from the members of the Carmelites of the Ancient Observance reached its peak in 1575 when they denounced the discalced (barefoot) Carmelites to the Inquisition. She died in Alba de Tormes (Salamanca) in 1582.
