" Composer and member of the movement known as the Musical Generation of '27 who spent most of his life in Mexico for political reasons. He is noted for his work as a teacher."

He was born in Madrid in 1900. In his childhood, he lived immersed in an intellectual environment (his brother Ernesto was also a composer and his sister Margarita was a pianist). He taught himself compositional skills, and together with teachers such as Manuel de Falla and Schoenberg, he came to be an important representative of the so-called musical generation of '27. After the Spanish Civil War, he went into exile in Mexico. He became a Mexican citizen and was appointed to the post of professor at the National Conservatory of Mexico. He was also made a life member of the Mexican Academy of Fine Arts. Starting in the 1970s, he travelled frequently to Spain to give classes. He died in Mexico in 1987.
