Born in Madrid in 1928, he went on to study Philosophy and Letters in Madrid. While he was often classified as a self-taught composer, he also studied at the conservatory in his native city. He is one of the representatives of the generation of 51, and founder of Grupo Nueva Música (1958). In 1977, he was the first president of the Spanish Symphonic Composers Association, and one of the catalysts of experimental action music. He was sub-director of the magazine “Ritmo” between 1982 and 1993. On 21 January 2001, he entered the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts to occupy the chair left empty by Joaquín Rodrigo. He died in Madrid in 2008.
