Rafael Hernando y Palomar, was born in Madrid, in May 1822. He was a Spanish zarzuela composer. When he was 15 years old he joined the Music Conservatoire of Madrid, where he studied music theory and piano with Pedro Albéniz, singing with Baltasar Saldoni and composition with Ramón Carnicer. He also studied in Paris, where his first opera was premiered, as well as a religious composition, "Stabar Mater". He returned to Madrid in 1848 and joined Barbieri, Oudrid, Inzenga and Gaztambide, in a spontaneous movement for the revival of the zarzuela, which would lead to the creation of the Artistic Society to Cultivate Zarzuela. This group composed a collective work "Escenas de Chamberí", which made a great impact. He died in Madrid on 10 July 1888.
