" Dancer, choreographer and artistic director. He was one of the most innovative creators and forerunners of modern Spanish dance theatre. He developed dramatic themes in his creations."

Born in 1929, his real name was Rafael Eduardo Franco Sotomayor. He trained at Sadler’s Wells Ballet in London and moved to Spain to join the companies of Antonio Ruiz and Mariemma. He choreographed Rango (1979) and Retrato de Mujer (1981) premièred by Manuela Vargas for the Spanish National Ballet. He also created choreography for musicals such as Mata-Hari (1983), directed by Adolfo Marsillach, and Matador (1989), created in Chicago. He directed his own company, the Ballet Teatro Español de Rafael Aguilar, where he created Bolero (1987), Dique de Alhambra and Yerma (1988), premièred at the Venice Festival and Aires de Ida y Vuelta (1995), amongst others. He died in Madrid in March 1995.
