" Film director, producer and screenwriter. He is one of the most important Spanish filmmakers from the 1970s. The oppression of individuals by social forces has characterised his films."

He was born in Bilbao in 1938. He quit his studies in Economics and attended the Official Film School in Madrid. He graduated with the short film "Anabel" (1964). He made his debut in the cinema with "Días de viejo color" (1967), but he was not successful until 1973 with "No es bueno que el hombre esté solo", written by José Luis Garci. In "Un hombre llamado Flor de Otoño" (1978) he shows the double life of a solicitor, played by José Sacristán, who worked as a transvestite at night in a small cabaret club. From 2000 onwards he worked as a producer and a director. In 2010 he directed the theatre adaptation of "El pisito" by Rafael Azcona.
