He was born in Urrea de Gaén (Teruel) in 1908. He first studied in Valencia and after a few years moved to Madrid where he studied Medicine at the faculty where he would later become tenured professor, professor and head of department, and subsequently Rector. He has been made an honorary doctor by several Spanish and foreign universities. During the Spanish Civil War he aligned with the more conservative side and was appointed director of the Publications Section of the National Propaganda Service. After the war he joined the intellectuals who wanted to regenerate the country’s cultural life and founded the “Escorial” magazine. He wrote numerous essays about Spanish society, culture, medicine and literature. He founded the Arnau de Vilanova Institute for the History of Medicine (CSIC). He died in Madrid in 2001.
