"Cellist and composer. He is considered one of the greatest soloists in his instrument of all time. Even in old age he continued to play the cello for three hours every day."

Pau Carles Salvador Casals i Defilló was born in El Vendrell (Tarragona) in 1876. He received his first lessons in singing and musical theory from his father, the organist Carlos Casals. His international career began in 1897, with various concerts in Portugal. However his definitive establishment came in 1899 at the Crystal Palace in London. In 1904, he was conducted by Richard Strauss at Carnegie Hall in New York. One of his most famous compositions is the 'Hymn to the United Nations', or 'Hymn to Peace', composed in Puerto Rico during his exile. His recordings of Bach's cello suites are among the most highly regarded by critics and public alike. He died in San Juan (Puerto Rico) in October 1973.
