He was born in Maella (Zaragoza) in 1881, and trained at the school of La Llotja in Barcelona. His early works were linked to the 19th-century tradition, inspired by the sculptures of Maillol. However in 1911 he underwent a radical change brought about by a meeting with Picasso during a spell in Paris. The influence of primitive art can be seen in his masks and his metal figures. In 1914 he returned to Barcelona and obtained the Chair of Sculpture at the School of Arts and Crafts where he worked until 1924. With the arrival of the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera he returned to Paris where he settled definitively. In his last creative stage, the development of his figures was influenced by Modigliani's paintings. He died in Reus (Tarragona) in 1934.
