His full name is Nicanor Piñole Rodríguez. Born in Gijón in 1878, in 1892 he went to Madrid to enter the San Fernando School of Fine Arts. After his studies, he completed his training by working in the studio of the painter, Ángel Ferrant. In 1900, he travelled to Paris and Rome, where he lived until 1902. On returning to Spain, he established himself in his hometown. His artistic work comprises landscapes, scenes of daily life, portraits, self-portraits and popular scenes. He presented his paintings in exhibitions and national competitions, gaining special mentions; however, the prizes and awards were to arrive in the last period of his life. He died in Gijón, in 1978. Some time later, his widow donated much of his artistic legacy to create the Nicanor Piñole Museum, inaugurated in 1991.
