Sculpture, Painting

Date of birth

Jan 8, 1957

"Painter, sculptor, and ceramicist. He is considered one of the greatest artists of our times. In 2003 he received the Príncipe de Asturias Award for the Arts."

He was born in Felanitx (Majorca) in 1957. Raised amongst artists, he studied at the Arts and Trades School in Palma de Mallorca. During the mid-70s he moved to Barcelona and began to develop a painting style involving the creation of layers by superimposing materials. He came to international attention in 1982 with his participation in the Kassel Documenta VII exhibition. Barceló has spent long periods of time in Mali, and some of his creations reveal African influences. The new century has brought various major commissions: he was chosen to cover the Santísimo chapel of the cathedral in Palma de Mallorca with terracotta. He then painted the dome in the Human Rights and the Alliance of Civilisations Room at the United Nations in Geneva.
