" Journalist, writer and member of the Royal Spanish Academy of Language. He is one of the great referents of Spanish literature. He was granted the Cervantes Award in 1993."

Born in Valladolid in 1920. A student of Business and Law, he starts working with the “El Norte de Castilla” newspaper as a caricaturist and writer. Later, he would become director of the same publication. His first novel, “La sombra del ciprés es alargada”, wins the Nadal Award in 1947. In 1973 he becomes a member of the Royal Spanish Academy of Language and occupies seat E. During the speech given when he became an Academy member, titled “El sentido del progreso desde mi obra” (The Meaning of Progress through my work), he makes an allegation defending nature, one of the arguments upon which his work is based. In 1981 he publishes “Los santos inocentes”, which Mario Camus would bring to film in 1984. His last novel, “El hereje”, was published in 1998. He died in Valladolid in 2010.
