" Aristocrat, soldier and poet. A cultivated, erudite man whose work is considered the basis of Castilian humanism in the 15th century.
 "

Íñigo López de Mendoza was born in Carrión de los Condes in 1398. He spent his adolescence in the service of the court of Aragon (1412-1418). There he met Catalan and Valencian poets, and discovered the lyrical poetry of the troubadours and Italian literature. On his return to Castile, he took sides with John II, for whom he fought in several battles, and took part in the removal of Álvaro de Luna (1453). He took part in a last battle against the Moors, with Henry IV, and then retired to Guadalajara. His interest in culture is attested to by his valuable library, containing a variety of authors and genres, and translations of the classics, which he commissioned and supervised. His literary works show a range of influences. He attempted to adapt Italian metre to Spanish a century before Boscán. He died in Guadalajara in 1458.
