" Writer; became a Spanish national in 1993. One of the great Spanish language writers. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2010."

Born in Arequipa (Peru) in 1936. His youth is spent in Cochabamba (Bolivia), to which he moved with his mother when he was just one. In 1950 he enters the Leoncio Prado military academy, an experience he would later reflect in his novel “La ciudad y los perros” published in 1963. He worked with several newspapers in Lima, studied Literature and at 19 years of age, marries an uncle's wife, resulting in his family's rejection and causing his move to Paris. In 1990 he is candidate to national elections in Peru, but loses against Fujimori. The same year he becomes a Spanish national, 1994, he is awarded the Cervantes and becomes a member of the Spanish Royal Academy. He was granted the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2010.
