Born in Santander in 1935. In 1956, encouraged by Basilio Martín Patino, he studies at the Instituto de Investigaciones y Experiencias Cinematográficas where he earns a diploma as Director. Director of “Young Sánchez” about a boxer’s life, he is well-received by critics. After a period of commercial films featuring stars of the period, like Raphael or Sara Montiel, during the 80s he directs “La colmena” and “Los santos inocentes” based upon books of the same name written by Cela and Delibes. He is honoured with many awards for these films, both in Spain and abroad. Also a collaborator with television, he makes several adaptations from literary works, “Fortunata y Jacinta” or “La forja de un rebelde”. In 1985 he receives the National Cinematography Award and in 2011 the Honorary Goya. He died in Santander in 2021.
