" Dancer, teacher, choreographer and director of a Spanish dance company. The pianist and composer, Enrique Luzuriaga, created works for her."

She was born Guillermina Martínez Cabrejas in Íscar (Valladolid) in 1917. Her mother took an active part in her training and taught her the typical flamenco jotas and sevillanas. Mariemma began her artistic career as a dancer in the Chatelet Theatre Dance School in Paris when she was only ten years old. In 1943, she made her debut at the Teatro Español theatre in Madrid. In 1958, she was guest dancer at the Grand Ballet du Marquis de Cuevas. She received an offer to direct the Higher School of Dramatic Art in 1969, after touring Europe and America several times with her group, the Mariemma Ballet de España. In the mid-1980s, she started her own dance school. In 1990, the Ministry of Culture commissioned her to create a ballet homage to mark the centenary of Antonia Mercé 'La Argentina'. 1997 saw publication of the book 'Mis caminos a través de la Danza' ('My paths through dance') which traces her life and work, and includes a treatise on Spanish dance. She died in Madrid on 10 June, 2008.
