María Vargas Fernández was born in Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Cádiz), in 1947. In 1959, at the age of just 12, she participated in a tribute to Manuel Torre and Javier Molina, sharing the bill with some of the greatest flamenco stars of the time and went on to surprise and capture the hearts of the aficionados. This same year she came third in the National Flamenco Art Contest of Córdoba, in an edition at which the first prize was shared by singing sisters Fernanda and Bernarda de Utrera. In 1963, Manolo Caracol invited her to inaugurate his flamenco tablao in Madrid, Los Canasteros. She participated in festivals, contests and tours accompanied by some of the great guitarists, such as Manolo Sanlúcar, Paco de Lucía, Manuel Morao and Paco Cepero. Among other accolades, she received the Jerez de la Frontera National Flamenco Award and the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts.
