" Latin poet. He is known for his highly realistic narrative poem on the civil war between Caesar and Pompey.

He was born in Curduba (Cordoba), capital of Baetica, in the year 39 A.D., and died in Rome in the year 65 A.D. He moved to Rome with his parents when he was a child. There he received an excellent education from the Stoic Cornutus. He was one of Nero's best friends. Thanks to his uncle, Seneca, he managed to train in Stoic philosophy and arts. He recited the 'Laudes Neronis', which earned him the poets' laurel wreath (60). He was appointed quaestor and augur. Three of the ten books that make up 'Pharsalia', originally known as 'Bellum civile', are dedicated to Nero. From then on he distanced himself from Nero and started to write his works with a Republican tone. In the year 65 A.D. he led the Pisonian conspiracy and committed suicide when he was discovered, as did his uncle Seneca.
