Date of death

" Poet and civil servant. He is a representative figure of the modernist spirit in the Spanish poetry of his era."

Born in Seville in 1874, he moved with his family to Madrid in 1883 and studied at the Free Institute of Teaching, led by Giner de los Ríos. He lived long periods in Paris, where he had contact with French symbolist poetry that, along with Rubén Darío, had a great influence on his aesthetic conception. After 1909, with the publication of “El mal poema”(The Evil Poem), he sought inspiration in the roots of Andalusia. In 1910 he married his cousin Eulalia Cáceres, a deeply religious woman, and worked as an archivist and librarian. During the Civil War he collaborated with the nationalist propaganda section and was elected member of the Royal Spanish Academy (1938). He was the brother of the great poet Antonio Machado, with whom he wrote several works in collaboration. He died in Madrid in 1947.
