"Film director, screenwriter and writer. His work as a director was recognized with the National Film Award in 2005."

He was born in Torrelavega (Cantabria) in 1942. In 1961 he moved to Madrid, where he obtained a degree in Philosophy and Letters and earned the title of director from the Official Film School. His first full-length film “Habla mudita” won the Critics’ Award at the Berlin Film Festival in 1974. He has also directed theatrical works and has collaborated on television, where he directed the series “El Quixote,” which received awards at several national and international festivals. In 1993 he was elected president of the Society of Authors and Publishers, and was elected in 2000 as president of the Federation of European Film Directors. He announced his retirement from film in 2008 to work exclusively in literature. He received the Herralde Award for the novel “La vida antes de marzo” (Life before March) (2009).
