" Poet, editor and filmmaker. He is probably the most spiritual and intimist poet from the Generation of '27. The musicality of his compositions stands out."

Manuel Altolaguirre was born in Malaga in 1905. He studied with the Jesuits in Malaga and Law in Granada. His first vocation was to be an editor. He published the "Litoral" magazine and edited fundamental poetry books with his wife, Concha Méndez. He lived in Paris, Cuba and Mexico after the Civil War broke out. From then onwards his main activity was filmmaking. He was awarded the Critics' Prize in Cannes (1952) for his work as a screenwriter, and the Silver Eagle of Mexico for "Mexican Bus Ride", directed by Buñuel. He directed "The Song of Songs", based on the version by Fray Luis de León. He returned to Spain in 1959 to present it in San Sebastián, and died in Burgos in a car accident. He died in Burgos in 1959.
