He was born in Alburquerque (Badajoz) in 1948 to a family of agricultural workers, and wrote his first poems at the age of 14. He moved to Madrid to study Hispanic Philology at the Complutense University. It was during these university years that he began to write short stories. He has been assistant professor at the Complutense University and visiting professor at Yale University. He has also given classes in secondary schools and at the Higher School for Drama in Madrid. In 1989 he published his first novel, “Juegos de la edad tardía” (Games late in life). This book about the literary hopes of a mature man received numerous awards, among them the Ícaro Award for new creators and a year later, in 1990, the Critics' Award and the National Literature Award.
