Lope de Stúñiga

Birth: 1410

Death: around 1480

"Castilian aristocrat and poet, from Navarre. Rather than for his poetry, he is known because his name was given to the "Cancionero de Stúñiga" songbook."

He was born around 1410 into one of the noble families in Navarre who took part in the Castilian Civil War under the command of Peter I. This and other public events in which he was involved inspired his literary works and they had a typically chivalric tone. He was famous because he gave the 400 A.D. songbook its name - "Cancionero de Stúñiga" - compiled in Naples after the death of Alfonso V of Aragón, which greatly expresses the spirit of his court. But the title of the collection was simply due to the fact that this poet was the author of the first poem. Some of the poems that stand out are "Llorad, mis llantos, llorad" and "Si mis llagas mortales". He died around 1480.
