Leopoldo García-Alas y Ureña "Clarín" was born in Zamora in 1852. He belonged to an Asturian family and when he was seven they moved to Oviedo, which later on became the setting of his masterpiece, "La Regenta". He earned a PhD in Law in Madrid (1878); Giner de los Ríos supervised his thesis. He showed interest in literature when he was young and was skilful with theatre and satirical journalism. He made friends with his contemporaries, especially with Pérez Galdós, whom he considered his teacher. He was always hostile, however, towards Emilia Pardo Bazán, criticised her naturalism harshly and unjustly, and opposed to her joining the Royal Academy of Language. He also stood out in chronicles and short stories. He died in Oviedo in 1901.
