He was born in San Sebastián in 1958. After gaining his degree in Medicine and General Surgery, Medem entered into the film world with short films. Hs first feature length film “Vacas” was awarded a Goya for the Best New Director in 1993, year in which he opened “La Ardilla Roja”. In 1997, he established Alicia Produce, his own film production studio, with which he carried out some of his film works and produced others for third parties. In 2001, he directed “Lucía y el Sexo”, first feature film in Spanish shot with a high definition digital camera. In September 2003, he premiered “La Pelota Vasca” at the International San Sebastian Film Festival. “La piel contra la piedra”, a documentary on the political and social unrest in the Basque Country. In 2009, he directed “Room in Rome".
