"Writer and journalist. His work was essential in modernising the Catalan language and disseminating local customs and traditions."

Josep Pla i Casadevall was born in Palafrugell (Girona) in 1897. He studied medicine and graduated in law in Barcelona. After the Civil War, he stopped writing in Catalan until 1949. His very extensive works comprise more than 30,000 pages in Catalan and Spanish. They include travel writing, biographies, history, novels and short stories, although his temperament was little given to literary fiction. In 1956 he started to publish his complete works, which from 1966 were headed by his log, “El quadern gris”, which is his principal work and one that fully confirms his importance as a writer. Important among his last works are “Notes para Sílvia” and “Veure Catalunya”. He is the most widely read contemporary writer in Catalonia. He died in Llofriu (Girona) in 1981.
