" Writer. His work is a landmark in the transition from writing about regional customs and manners to the Realist prose fiction of the 19th century."

He was born in Polanco (Cantabria) in 1833 and studied in Santander. In 1852, he moved to Madrid in order to prepare for entrance to the Segovia Artillery Academy. However, the Bohemian lifestyle and literature led him down a different path. His literary career began in 1864 with the publication of “Mountain Scenes”, which was well received by the critics. After a frustrating incursion into politics on the side of the Carlist party, he returned to literature on the advice of Menéndez y Pelayo. At this point, he abandoned the style of customs and manners to dedicate himself to lengthy realist narration. His most notable works are “Sotileza” (1885), which portrays the lifestyle of fishermen, and “Peñas arriba” (1895), focusing on mountain inhabitants. He died in Santander in 1906.
