He was born in Jerez de la Frontera (Cadiz) in 1926. He studied Navigation and Astronomy in Cadiz and graduated in Philosophy and Arts in Seville. For ten years he worked as a teacher in various foreign universities, and particularly at Colombia University. In 1952 he published his first work, 'Las adivinaciones', which placed him squarely in the poetic group of the 1950s. He was also very interested in audiovisuals, and wrote screenplays for a series of documentaries for Andalusian television, as well as various stage adaptations of classical works. As a novelist he has received various prizes, including the Critics' Prize in 1975; the National Literature Award in 2005, and one year later the National Poetry Prize for his collection 'Manual de infractores'. He was awarded the Cervantes Award in 2012. He died in Madrid in 2021.

This book of poems is an initiation (and invitation) to dissidence, from its very title. It won for the Jerez-born poet José Manuel Caballero Bonald the National Poetry Award.
