He was born in Madrid in 1952. Grandson of Joaquín Turina, one of the most important figures in Spanish musical nationalism in the early 20th century. He studied in the music conservatoires of Barcelona and Madrid, as well as in many advanced courses (Vilaseca-Salou, Granada, Santiago de Compostela). Some of his teachers have been José Olmedo (harmony), Francisco Calés (counterpoint and fugue), Enrique García Asensio and Jacques Bodmer (orchestra conductor) and Rodolfo Halffter and Carmelo Bernaola (composition). His play "Ocnos" is a homage to the poetry of Luis Cernuda. In October 2000 the opera "D. Q. (Don Quijote en Barcelona)" was premiered, with a libretto by Justo Navarro, performance by Fura dels Baus and set design by Enric Miralles.

Yet another musical production based on the novel by Miguel Cervantes, composed by José Luis Turina. He received the SGAE Award for the best lyric score premiered in Spain that year.
