He was born in Salamanca in 1941 and graduated in law and sociology. After writing and directing various short films, he made his debut in 1973 with 'El love feroz'. In 1978 he was awarded the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival International for 'Las truchas'. In the 1980s he began to write screenplays in partnership with Rafael Azcona. Their first project together was 'La corte de Faraón' (1985), which received the Silver Shell award at the San Sebastián Film Festival. The adaptation of the work by Valle-Inclán, 'Tirano Banderas', earned him the Goya award for the best adapted screenplay. He has also directed theatre, including the production of 'The kiss of the spider woman' by Manuel Puig. In 1998 he toured Spain with 'Las últimas lunas', by Furio Bordon.
