" Philosopher, essayist and university professor. The dictatorship forced him to retire from his professorship, converting him in the prototype of the committed and critical Spanish intellectual."

Born in Ávila in 1909, José Luis López Aranguren held degrees in Law and in Philosophy and Letters from the Complutense University of Madrid and was a professor of Ethics and Philosophy at the same university. Very interested in religious studies, his ideas and studies evolved into Marxism and Neopositivism. For political reasons, he was removed from his post from 1966 to 1976. During those years, he visited several European and American universities as a visiting lecturer. In 1979 he recovered his professorship and with it, the acknowledgements began. In 1989 his work “Ética de la felicidad y otros lenguajes” (The ethics of happiness and other languages) won the National Essay Award. He was also awarded the Príncipe de Asturias Communication and Humanities Award in 1995. He died in Madrid in June 1996.
