" A choreographer and dancer, he was known as Maestro Granero and was a renowned representative of contemporary Spanish dance."

José Greller Freisel, known as José Granero, was born in Buenos Aires in 1936. He started his training at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and completed his studies under outstanding figures in the dance world in the United States. He also studied Indian dance with the great Bashjar. His first Spanish experiences were with the companies of Pilar López, Marienma and Luisillo. As a choreographer, he produced his first works commissioned for José Greco and Antonio Gades, with whom he created Don Juan (1965). He founded the Ballet Español in Madrid in 1981 and staged works such as El Jaleo and Albaicín. He also produced El sur for Manuela Vargas and Mujeres which was premiered at La Maestranza Theatre in Seville. On commission for the National Ballet of Spain, he produced Leyenda, La gitanilla and Medea. His last choreographic work was Espartaco in 2005. He was director of the Andalusian Dance Centre (run by the Cultural Department of the Regional Government of Andalusia) from 2005 to 2006. He died in Madrid in 2006.
