He was born in Madrid in 1943. He studied acting and directing with William Layton, Miguel Narros and Rosalía Prado in the Teatro Estudio Madrid theatre, and later in New York with Stella Adler and Sandford Meissner. In 1965 he was one of the founder members of the project known as the Independent Experimental Theatre (TEI), a forerunner of today's contemporary theatre groups. Between 1977 and 1988 he co-directed the company Teatro Estable Castellano, whose programme earned widespread prestige. Its productions include particularly 'Las bicicletas son para el verano' and 'The house of Bernarda Alba'. He created the stage direction for concerts by Ana Belén and Víctor Manuel, as well as for operas in France, Argentina, Italy and Spain. He has also taught courses in various Spanish universities. He was at the head of the National Drama Centre from 1989 to 1994. Since 1999 he has run 'Escénica' (Andalusian Centre for Performance Studies), which he has transformed into a space for theatrical experimentation.
