Date of death

" Poet of the Generation of 27 group. His clear, amiable lyrical poetry is a paradigm of what is known as "pure poetry"."

He was born in Valladolid in 1893. His life runs in parallel with that of his friend Pedro Salinas, whom he succeeded as reader in Spanish at the French La Sorbonne University, from 1917 to 1923. He studied as a child, up to his baccalaureate, in his native city. Although he began to study Philosophy and Arts in Madrid, staying at the Students’ Residence, he graduated at the University of Granada. He was Professor of literature in the universities of Murcia and Seville, and was a reader at Oxford from 1929 to 1931. He was exiled to the United States from 1938, where he worked as a teacher at Wellesley College. Following retirement he lived in Italy and then, after the death of Franco, in Malaga. Modernist ornamentation disappears completely in his poetry, leaving only the pure and precise word. He died in Malaga in 1984.
