Joaquín Romualdo Gaztambide y Garbayo was born in Tudela (Navarre) in 1822. He was a choirboy at Tudela Cathedral and a student of Pablo Rubla. He took piano lessons with José Guelbenzu in Pamplona. He went to the María Cristina Conservatoire in Madrid (1842) and finished his studies with Pedro Albéniz and Ramón Carnicer. He was choir director at the Italian company of the Teatro de la Cruz (1845) and he travelled to Paris as director of a ballet company. When he returned to Spain (1848), he became director of the Teatro Español, where he premiered his first zarzuela operetta La mensajera. In 1869 he set up his zarzuela company and toured Cuba and Mexico. He returned very ill to Madrid where, soon after his arrival, he died on 18th March 1870.
