Sculpture, Painting

Date of birth

Apr 20, 1893

Date of death

" Painter, sculptor, engraver and ceramicist. He is considered one of the great exponents of surrealism."

Born in Barcelona in 1893, he studied at the Llotja Higher School of Industrial and Fine Arts until 1910 under Modest Urgell and Josep Pascó. His work reflects his interest in the unconscious, the “infantile” and his native country. Initially he was strongly influenced by the fauves, cubists and expressionists, and then evolved towards a flat painting with a certain naïf air. He went into voluntary exile in Normandy during the Civil War. In 1975 he created the Joan Miró Foundation. Its building in Barcelona, designed by Josep Luis Sert, is the most outstanding example Catalan rationalist construction. The aim of the Foundation, which houses a large part of his work, is to promote new trends in contemporary art. He died in Palma de Mallorca in 1983.
