"Poet and translator. Considered one of the fathers of modern Catalan poetry."

Joan Maragall i Gorina was born in Barcelona in 1860. He abandoned his career in law to devote himself to literature. His work on translating Goethe into Catalan had a great influence on him. In 1894, he won the Juegos Florales literary competition with his poem, “La Sardana”. The following year the “Poesies” book was published. This included one of his most famous poems, “The blind cow”. The “colonial disaster” of 1898, in which Spain lost the last of its American and Asian colonies, led him to adopt tendencies similar to those of the Generation of 98 literary movement, maintaining an intense letter-writing relationship with Unamuno from 1900 onwards. The “Visions i cants” collection (1900) contains the start of his extended legendary poem, “El comte Arnau”. This sealed his reputation, and he was declared the heir to Verdaguer (1902) and the greatest poet in the Catalan language. He died in Barcelona in 1911.
