"Conductor. He has conducted some of the major orchestras in Europe and America and carried out musicological research on operas by the old masters."

Born in Toro (province of Zamora) in 1940, he graduated in philosophy and letters from the Complutense University in Madrid, and in 1966 received a degree in Composition. He studied at the conservatories of Granada and Madrid and then moved to New York to extend his studies. He made his debut as a conductor in 1969 in Venice, where he developed his interest in both the symphonic and operatic repertoire. He was Music Director of the Opera of Berlin from 1981 to 1990, conductor of the Spanish National Orchestra from 1984 to 1988 and Music Director of the Teatro Real in Madrid from 2002 to 2010. He was named Honorary Conductor of the Provincial Youth Orchestra of Malaga in 2001. He died in Berlin in 2018.
