" Playwright and journalist. Nobel Prize for Literature in 1922 and one of the most popular and productive playwrights of the era."

Born in Madrid in 1866, he began studying law but abandoned his studies to devote himself He began to frequent literary talks and published his first poetry collection Versos in 1886. His concept of theatre collided with the norm at the time, personified by José Echegaray. He premièred his first work in 1896 but success only came in 1903 with the première of Saturday Night. His consecration came in 1907 with The Bonds of Interest. He wrote 162 theatre pieces, many staged with the great divas of the era such as María Guerrero or Lola Membrives. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1922. He died in 1954 in Madrid at the age of 87.
