" Painting and illustrator. One of the most important figures in Spanish pictorial modernism."

Born in Barcelona in 1872, in 1893 he joined the La Llotja Fine Arts School in Barcelona. That same year, alongside Adriá Gual and Joaquín Mir, he created the Colla del Safra, named for the saffron tone of the landscapes. His stay in the Caldes de Bohí spa town with Julio Vallmitjana and Ricardo Canals in 1896 led to a new aspect to his painting, which from then was dedicated to the world of the marginalised. His themes centred on the world of the gypsies and socially marginalised women from 1901 on, and his palette moved noticeably darker. This was not initially welcomed by critics ad public alike. He did not become successful until 1910. He published his drawings in Papitu. He died in Barcelona in 1911.
