Born in San Salvador (El Salvador) in 1950, after setting up in Spain he studied journalism and cinema at the Official Film School in Madrid. He premièred his first feature film in 1979, The Burgos Trial setting out his concern for issues linked to the Basque Country. He took up the same theme in La fuga de Segovia and La muerte de Mikel. The première of The Dumbfounded King in 1991 saw a change from his previous work and the film won seven Goya Awards. He returned to the Basque conflict with Running Out of Time (1994), a film which went on to win several Goyas and the Golden Shell at the San Sebastián Film Festival. In 2000 he premièred Plenilune and, in 2002, Carol’s Journey. In 2007 he adapted Arturo Pérez Reverte’s The Nautical Chart for the big screen.
