" An Islamic philosopher, theologian and mystic poet. Known as one of the greatest masters of Sufi tradition."

He was born in Murcia in 1165. His father was a native of Murcia and his mother was Berber. He and his family moved to Seville when he was 7 years old. His first studies were in Lora del Río and Carmona. First he was to travel his native al-Andalus and then North Africa, visiting the different Sufi groups. Later he journeyed to Cairo and Jerusalem. After spending two years in Mecca, he travelled to Bagdad, Mosul, Turkey and Damascus, where he lived for 17 years. His tomb is a place of pilgrimage for Muslims. His collection of poems, “Interpreter of Ardent Desires”, inspired by a Persian woman, is an amalgam of figures from the Bible and the Koran. “Meccan Revelations” is a complete compendium of Islamic metaphysics and traditional sciences. His work is religious-Gnostic in nature. He died in Damascus in 1240.
