Architecture, Sculpture, Painting

Date of birth

May 12, 1948

"Painter, architect and sculptor. He is one of the great contemporary artists in Spain and a key figure in post-modernism.."

He was born in Tarifa, Cadiz in 1948 and started to study Architecture, although he gave this up to devote himself to painting. He arrived in Madrid in 1968 and became known as a painter. With the cultural explosion in the city during the 1980s, he immersed himself in the ‘Movida Madrileña’ counter-cultural movement. At first, his paintings were highly coloured and had a strong Mannerist and Baroque influence, which makes some experts include them in the Neo-mannerist school. He has also designed sets, produced engravings and lithography, worked with ceramics and bronze, and designed furniture and carpets. In 1985, he was awarded the National Plastic Arts Prize, and in 2006, the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts.
