He was born in Madrid in 1881 and started work in literary publishing from a young age. He also played an important part in founding the magazines ‘Helios’ and ‘Renacimiento’, and later in establishing the publishing house, Renacimiento. Although he was known as a modernist poet at first, his main contribution to the literary world is his work in the theatre (continuing the path already started by Jacinto Benavente), and the innovations he introduced on the stage. These days, it seems evident that his plays were written in close collaboration with his wife, María de la O Lejárraga, also a writer. He died in Madrid in 1947.
