" Medieval writer. He was the first poet to write in the Spanish language whose name is known."

Born in Berceo, around 1195, he was educated at San Millán Monastery ("in Sant Millán de Suso, he was brought up a child") and became a secular cleric. He worked first as a deacon (1221) and then as a presbyter (1237), a teacher of novices and notary of the abbot Juan Sánchez. He had a brother who was also a cleric. He received a fine education: from 1222 to 1227 he attended the General Studies University of Palencia, the first in Spain, founded by Bishop Tello Téllez de Meneses, whom he names in his works. He is the first representative of the so-called “Mester de Clerecía” literary genre. He instigated the erudite poetry movement, in contrast to popular epic and minstrelsy. He died in San Millán de la Cogolla, around 1268.
