He was born in Miraflores de la Sierra (Madrid) in 1947. He studied English language and literature at the Complutense University in Madrid. He soon discovered his true vocation and moved to the University of Exeter to study drama. He began work in the cinema as a set designer but his broad knowledge of the medium encouraged him to direct his own films. After an extensive career as a set designer and director, he then headed the National Drama Centre in 2004. Three years later he took part in 'Divinas palabras' at the Lincoln Centre Festival in New York, one of the most important and demanding cultural institutions in the United States.
